acac Fitness & Wellness — Crozet.

Full-service fitness club. Operates the pool at Crozet Park.

Quick facts

  1. Operates the outdoor pool at Crozet Park. The acac–Crozet Park partnership is the unsung infrastructure of the village summer: lifeguards, swim lessons, the kiddie pool with the spray garden, and the lap lanes that fill up on July afternoons.
  2. Twenty-four-hour member access in Old Trail. Staffed Mon–Thu 8 AM–8 PM, with the rest of the week scaled down. The 24/7 access is what makes it work for early-morning lifters and late-night runners on shift schedules.
  3. On-site physical therapy, group exercise studio, personal training, and an InBody composition lab. The "wellness" half of the name is not marketing, it's a small but real PT clinic operating Mon–Thu 7 AM–7 PM.

Overview

acac Fitness & Wellness opened its Crozet location at 1015 Heathercroft Circle, Suite 100, in the Old Trail commercial cluster, several years after the brand had become the dominant fitness club operator in the Charlottesville region. The Crozet branch fills the role that a YMCA fills in many small American towns: the village's main full-service gym, with cardio, strength, group exercise, and a substantial kid-and-family programming layer. It is also, more importantly for Crozet, the operator of the outdoor pool at Claudius Crozet Park.

That last detail is what makes acac matter to Crozet beyond its membership base.

The Crozet Park pool

Crozet Park is a 22-acre, community-owned 501(c)(3) operating since 1958. The park's outdoor pool, kiddie pool, and spray garden are part of the village summer in a way that is hard to overstate, swim lessons, summer-camp afternoons, the post-soccer-practice cool-down, the Fourth of July afternoon. The pool is the hub.

acac runs it. The lifeguards, swim lessons, lap-swim hours, family-swim hours, the small concessions, all of that is acac staff working at Crozet Park under a long-running partnership. Without the operator agreement, the pool would either need to be run by the park's small volunteer board (it would not work) or sit closed (it would devastate the village summer). The arrangement is the public-private cooperation small towns sometimes get right: a private club that brings staff and operating expertise, a community park that owns the asset, a village that benefits.

Park members and acac members get separate access tiers. Daily passes are available for non-members during the season. Swim lessons run through the summer for kids aged a few months on up.

The Old Trail club

The acac branch itself is in the corner unit of the Heathercroft Circle commercial cluster, one of the multi-tenant buildings that anchored the Old Trail neighborhood as it built out through the 2010s. It is set up as a full-service fitness club, not a budget chain.

The room layout includes a Cardio Theatre (treadmills, bikes, ellipticals, screens), a strength and free-weight area with racks and platforms and the standard machine selectorized equipment, a functional training space for mobility and small-group work, and a dedicated Group Exercise Studio for classes. Full-service locker rooms include the chilled lavender towels that have become a small acac signature touch.

The class schedule runs broad: yoga, high-intensity interval formats, athletic conditioning, strength-focused sessions. Personal training is available with certified trainers. There is a separate GLP-1 support program, three months of structured fitness coaching for members on obesity-management medications, a service most independent gyms can't afford to staff.

Wellness, in practice

The "wellness" in the name covers two real services beyond the gym floor.

On-site physical therapy runs in a clinic embedded in the building, Mon–Thu 7 AM–7 PM, Fri 7 AM–5 PM, closed weekends. The PT staff work on referrals and self-pay. For Crozet residents recovering from knee surgery or a running injury, having PT in the same building as the gym they're rehabbing back into is a meaningful piece of continuity, the same staff member can watch the same body progress through six weeks of therapy and the next six weeks of return-to-training.

InBody composition testing runs as a member service. The InBody machine produces a body-composition snapshot, fat mass, lean mass, segmental analysis, that is more useful than a scale and less involved than a DEXA scan. acac uses it as a benchmarking tool for personal-training members.

The acac Café and a small logo shop round out the ground floor.

Hours and access

Members have 24/7 access to the gym floor via badge. Staffed hours are when the desk is open, classes are running, and the PT clinic is staffed:

  • Mon–Thu 8 AM–8 PM
  • Fri 8 AM–6 PM
  • Sat 8 AM–12 PM
  • Sun unstaffed (member access still works)

The 24/7 access is what makes the gym practical for early-morning lifters who want to be in the rack at 5:15 AM and out by 6:30, and for hospital workers and emergency responders on shift schedules that don't line up with normal staffed hours. Family Time hours are designated for kids accompanying parents; the upper teen-and-up youth fitness program serves members 13+.

First Fridays is the standing guest-access policy: members get up to twelve complimentary guest visits per year, with the first Friday of each month as the easiest day to bring a friend.

Visiting

Address: 1015 Heathercroft Circle, Suite 100, Crozet, VA 22932. Phone: (434) 817-2055. Website: acac.com/locations/crozet.

Membership tiers run from a Crozet-only single-club membership up through full-network access (acac runs four locations across the Charlottesville region, plus the Crozet Park pool). Day passes and short-term passes are available for residents trying out the club. The club is set up to handle drop-ins from out-of-town members of compatible reciprocal networks.

For the Crozet Park pool specifically, season passes and daily admission are sold seasonally, see crozetpark.org for the current season's pricing and hours, which run from late May through early September.

Why it matters

A 9,000-person village having a full-service fitness club with on-site PT is unusual. A 9,000-person village having a full-service fitness club that *also* operates the community pool is rarer still. That is the structural reason acac matters to Crozet: it is not just a place to work out. It is the operator of one of the village's most-used summer amenities, the employer of dozens of local lifeguards and trainers, and the daily morning destination for a meaningful slice of Crozet's commute-and-return-home population.

The future of Crozet Park includes plans for a covered 8-lane 25-yard indoor pool, gymnasium, and indoor track, capital projects the park's board has been working toward for years. Whatever shape that project ultimately takes, acac is the operator most likely to staff it. For now, the outdoor pool is the asset and acac is the operator. The arrangement has worked. The village has summer.
